Take Pictures of Your Growing Foundation Damage Or Cracks

I champion people and try to get them to look at their house, at least once a year. One of the easiest ways to inspect your home is to use a home inspection checklist and if you really want a good home inspection checklist, there's a good chance that you are going to need to purchase one. You get what you pay for and don't ever forget that.

Foundation repairs usually start with a small crack and that's no joke. If you notice a crack, take a picture of it and save it somewhere. If you think, that the crack is actually getting a little bigger or starting to separate, you can simply take another picture and compare the two photos.

I would like to give you an example of what I'm talking about. Sometimes we look at something and we think that it's getting larger, but we don't have anything to compare it to. As time goes on, we think that the crack is still getting larger, but our mind is creating an optical illusion. This happens to a lot of people.

If you had a picture, from a few years ago, you could refresh your memory and this could be very helpful in reducing your anxiety or jumping to conclusions about foundation damage. Trust me, sometimes, I'm like a medical emergency crew, going to visit a homeowner to relieve their foundations stress. People panic over foundation cracks and I'm the doctor they call for any one of their home emergencies.

I would also advise you to take pictures of the rest of your home. How hard would it be to take about 300 pictures of your home each year and store them on your computer or on a disk, for easy access later? A picture is worth a thousand words and don't ever forget that.

Home Purchasing Checklists Provide Protection

Home purchasing checklists provide protection for consumers with useful information for future home repairs or current home repairs that will need to be done before the home is sold. Home inspectors often use checklists like these, while they're inspecting the home.

If more home shoppers used home inspection checklist while shopping for houses, we would probably have more satisfied homebuyers than dissatisfied ones. Recently just purchasing a home, we had our real estate professional, the previous homeowner's real estate professional and a mortgage lender, involved in the purchase of the property.

There was a home inspection report from the current homeowners, available for us to look at. It provided us with the damaged parts of the home that were repaired or replaced. Some of these repairs were from termite damage and it was stated so on the report. This was helpful information for us as we walked around the home inspecting it for damage.

The work that was repaired to look satisfactory and the rest of the home had minor damage. Listening to one of the real estate sales people that were involved in the transaction, you would've thought we would get in the deal of a lifetime and they had nothing but good news to say about the product they were representing. I easily understood that, this person could have influenced some one into believing that the home was in great shape, if they didn't have a home inspection checklist with them.

The home had been re-carpeted, painted and was in generally good shape. The problems with the home, were the old windows that were hard to open, the heating unit leaked gas, the tile flooring that ran through the kitchen and a large room addition looked great, except for one thing, they installed the tile over linoleum.

This eventually will have to be replaced as the tile starts to separate from the linoleum. While I'm writing this article, there's about 40 square feet of tile that needs to be replaced, because it's popping up and cracking.

A home purchasing checklist does not guarantee that you will find everything but can't eliminate some of the things that homeowners have the biggest problems with. If you could just eliminate one of these problems, the small price of purchasing, one of these checklists would be worth it.

Home purchasing checklists provide protection for the shopper and I would recommend, never shopping for a home without one.

How to Choose Bathroom Cabinet Knobs and Handles

We have all heard the old adage that the small things in life matter most. This proverb can be applied to almost anything in life including your at-home projects. Every detail, down to the last square inch of your room should be meticulously planned ahead of time. Skimming over the fine points and solely focusing on the big picture can turn what was planned to be a perfect room into a major disaster. When remodeling your bathroom, therefore, invest proper time and effort in choosing the best bathroom cabinet knobs.

Make a Splash With Color

Believe it or not, you can vary the color of your cabinet hardware to add a unique element to your overall design. Average households and apartments feature traditional cabinet knobs in traditional metal such as chrome, iron, copper, brass and nickel. However, matching the metals with a complimentary finish could easily transform your mundane cabinet knobs to the perfect accent pieces on your cabinet drawers and shelving units. Popular elegant finishes include: oil rubbed, satin, matte, Swedish, weathered, polished and antiqued.

Not sure if these options are for you? There are other ultra trendy options available for you. Accent your white cabinets with colored glass cabinet pulls. The colored glass is literally available in any color in the spectrum. This way, you can perfectly match your towels, throw rugs and shower curtains with the right color. For a more contemporary style, mix and match these colors to create a funky, unique look. Be sure to limit your colors to two or three primary colors-you do not want too many bold colors competing with your eye.

Re-Install for Easier Access

Like many homeowners, there is probably just one door knob or towel rack that just does not seem to be in the right position. Oftentimes, previous owners move the height of light switches, cabinetry hardware and racks to accommodate their needs (which, chances are, are different from yours). Do not be afraid to change the location of your current bathroom cabinet handles. By moving these units just a half inch up, down, left or right, you might just find yourself having an easier time in the bathroom.

Shape Up Your Style

Your bathroom should reflect your and your family's personality and style. Unless you prefer plain cabinet pulls, consider installing new shapes that reflect, well, you! There are endless novelty cabinet knobs out there, just use your imagination. If you're a sea lover, adding delicate nickel sea horses, dolphins and starfish add a cozy, comfortable feel. Sports lovers can choose from the plethora of equipment pieces for football, soccer, baseball and basketball. Imagine redecorating the kids' bathroom - incorporating what they like; they'll love it!

When deciding what elements of your personality to include, do not limit yourself to bathroom hardware. By hanging photographs of the family at the beach, or the picture of your son's first home run, you'll create a comfortable environment that feels therapeutic instead of plain and sterile.

Practice Safety First

Finally, one of the most important elements to any bathroom is security. We have all had one embarrassing "walk-in" moment in our lives, and we'd sure like to prevent them. Test out your current locks; be sure that you cannot force your bathroom door open when the lock mechanism is engaged. This will prevent any accidents as well as ensure privacy for your guests. Additionally, if your family includes children and pets, you must install proper locking devices on cabinets that contain harmful chemical agents. Often, plastic child-proof locks can be easily manipulated. Chances are that if your child has seen you open the cabinet, they will figure out how to do the same. Do not take the risk of having an accident. Eliminate the dangers by keeping prescription medication and dangerous chemicals in a high, dry storage area where children and pets will be less likely to reach.

Do-It-Yourself Concrete Room Addition Foundation

This information can also be very important to do-it-yourselfers that will be building other projects, for future home improvements. How can a do-it-yourselfer learn to build a concrete room addition foundation? Let's get started.

The first thing that you're going to need is a set of plans or building blueprints and they should have been approved by your local building department and planning department. There should be specific architectural details, that you will need to examine carefully, to build your new concrete room addition foundation correctly.

Let's get started with the digging. You're building plans, should give you the width and depth and the exact location, of the building footings that will need to be dug. Grab your shovels and get started. Make sure that all of the dirt is removed properly, before you start to form the room addition foundation footings.

Next you will need to form the foundation. This can be done using 2 x 10 or 2 x 12 form boards. You can easily apply these form boards, in the exact location, that the building plans are suggesting. You can use 1 x 3 wood or metal stakes that can be purchased at any home improvement or lumber yard, to hold up your form boards in the correct position.

The sole purpose of the form boards, will be to hold the concrete in, once it is poured. Next you will need to install all of the rebar and building hardware, that will also be required on your building blueprints. Make sure that you examine these building plans to find the exact location, for all of your anchor bolts, hold down bolts and all of your structural rebar.

Once this is done, you're ready to pour your concrete, but don't pour your concrete, until you have contacted your local building inspector to examine your new room addition building foundation.

How to Give Your Bathroom a Custom Look With Knobs and Pulls

Many homes today that have been purchased brand new or have been recently built suffer from something like a case of the blahs. The home itself is, of course, beautiful, or you wouldn't have bought it, but you may also find your new surroundings a bit sterile, particularly in the bathroom.

Brand new bathrooms are often done entirely in white - white walls, white tile flooring, white tub, white shower stall, white sinks...that's a lot of white, and certainly doesn't do much to show your personality. To really start feeling at home and comfortable in your new house and bathroom, you will want to put your own personal stamp on things, you'll want to express your unique sense of style, and the good news is that all that white makes the perfect canvas to put your creativity to work on.

Many of the things you can do to dress up your bathroom fall into the do-it-yourself home remodeling category. A bath remodel does not have to involve a contractor and a plumber, particularly when you just want to decorate the room, not tear it apart and start over again. If you don't want white walls, then a coat of paint in your favorite color will go a long way towards sprucing things up. Since much of the space in your bathroom is taken up by other things - toilet, tub, sink and vanity, medicine cabinet, shower stall - you can get away with painting the walls a bright or bold color without it being overpowering.

The next thing to look at is the shower curtains and window treatments. Adding in draperies for both the windows and the shower in a fabric that you love will instantly change the whole look of the room, and when you add in other matching bathroom accessories like rugs, toothbrush holders, soap dishes, and more, your bathroom is blah no more!

The last area to focus on is bathroom lighting and cabinet hardware. A beautiful new light fixture that blends in well with everything else you've done is an addition that is both functional and decorative, and to finish things off, choose knobs and pulls that complement either the room as a whole, or match the material your lighting fixture is made of. Bathroom cabinet knobs and drawer pulls come in a huge array of different styles and finishes, and while they are necessary items that you need in order to access your bathroom cupboards, your cabinet knobs can also be highly decorative.

It is easy - and if you shop carefully, also inexpensive - to put your mark on your plain bathroom and give it a custom look that lets your personality and style shine through.

Avoiding Mistakes For Do-It-Yourselfers - Drain Clearing

The other day I was in a popular home improvement center picking up some irrigation parts for our house, when I was ease dropping on a conversation between an older man and one of the stores representatives. The man explained to the so-called in house plumbing expert that he had a clogged drain and was looking for a product that could be poured into the drain and solve his problems.

They were both standing in front of the liquid plumber selection of fine products(that was a joke). What product do you recommend the older man asked. The do-it-yourselfer plumbing expert answered by pointing to a product that he recommended, this seems to do a pretty good job at clearing drains. The older man, having been around the block before, a little more educated than he was a few years ago, from his previous purchases of a product that claimed to perform a task, but didn't.

If this was a young man or woman, I would have waited until the home improvement specialist left the area and then, I would've explained who I was, and my experience with a few of these products. However, I felt that this man, who looked like he was in his late 60s or early 70s, should've known better. I chose the let him help the economy with his purchase. I guess in a sense, I was doing my good deed for the day.

Their conversation soon ended as the in-house plumbing expert left to advise another customer, hopefully on something that he actually knew something about. The older gentleman selected a different product and quickly scaned the area to make sure that the person who had assisted him wasn't around as he scampered off in a hurry.

Here's a quick tip on how to avoid mistakes as a do-it-yourselfer. Don't assume that liquid drain cleaning products will solve your problem. Try not to get caught up in your home improvement advisers solution to your problem. I have watched them sell products to unsuspecting customers and even had them try to sell me something that didn't work.

I personally, have never had any luck unclogging any drain pipes with any liquid drain cleaner. I don't know if my message is loud and clear here and hope that anyone who has gotten this far, reading the article will not believe everything that they read, because the book or product says professional plumbing expert or listen to someone because they're wearing a shirt that says ask me, I'm a home improvement expert.

If you choose to ignore my advice, know this, you will be forever doomed to repeat the mistakes that others have made before you.

More Hotel Tips For Women Travelers

To continue the discussion from my previous article, Hotel Tips for Women Travelers (and a few men too), the following are a few more tips, from an insider, to help you when traveling make your trip and your stay at a hotel pleasant, smooth, and successful.

While Staying at the Hotel

Do not leave your key lying around in public areas like the pool or exercise room. Some hotels still put room numbers on the keys and you do not want anybody unknown to you to know what room you are staying in. If you should happen to lose your key or lock it in your room, the hotel will need photo ID of the registered guest to receive another copy of the key. Most hotels have a strict policy regarding the issuing copies of room keys and will only provide them for the guest registered to the room. This is a safety issue, not a service issue and most hotels treat this safety issue very seriously for your personal protection.

If There is a Problem

While the hotel staff is trying their best to provide the best customer service they can, to hundreds of people each day, the unforeseen may pop up and you might experience a problem during your stay. In this situation you should speak with the front desk to explain the problem and ask for it to be resolved. The front desk is the communication center of the hotel and they will be able to contact the right person to address the problem. If you can think of a solution that you feel is fair to both you and the hotel, suggest your solution as a possible way to fix the problem. Most hotel staff members are trained to take care of situations to the guests satisfaction and if they know up front what you consider a satisfactory solution they may be able to provide that solution much more quickly.

Remember to remain calm and to act in a professional manner. If the staff member feels that you are making a personal attack against them, when they are trying to help you, your problem may not be resolved completely to your satisfaction or in a timely manner. Threatening to never use their hotel again may cause the staff member to decide that, in your case, nothing can be done because they already lost your business. Acting like the Big Shot may cause a hotel employee to think you are trying to get an extra service for nothing and could possibly doubt the validity of your story. You are a guest of the hotel, a customer, and that should be enough to have your problem fixed. Should you feel that you are not getting the help you desire, ask to speak with a supervisor, the hotel manager or the propertys general manager.

Some unhappy guests feel they get better results by calling the hotel chains customer service department at the national level. In practically every case they will ask if you said anything to the hotel staff while still at the hotel, where they could have the opportunity to resolve the problem before you left. Usually they will refer the complaint back to the hotel anyway and just act as intermediary until the case can be closed. Should you feel it necessary to call the national customer service department, have as much information available as possible. Give specific information to describe the problem, include the date, time and location of the event, they will need your name and confirmation number, and the name and title of any staff members you dealt with and a description of any actions taken by those individuals. It is always best to deal with the hotel staff and managers directly, that is what they are there for, to make your stay a happy one, as best they can.

When Ready to Leave

Search your room completely. Open every closet door and every drawer, even if you never used them, look on the back of the bathroom door for the robe or swim suit you hung there. Check under the edges of the beds to find that shoe and unroll the bedspread to find the map or the car keys. Check any shelves or tables in the room as well as the vanity in the bathroom. If the hotel has a refrigerator, be sure to look in there for that bottle of water or piece of fruit you put in the night before.

At Check Out

Watch your luggage from the room to your car. If you used the hotels safety deposit boxes, make sure you gather everything from the box. Turn in all the room keys the hotel issued to you. Look over your hotel bill thoroughly to make sure the charges are correct before signing. Verify that the correct credit card is applied to the charges and, if you are a club member, that your premium membership number is noted. Take your receipt, especially if you paid in cash.

What to Tip

In the service industry it is customary to Tip those who provided you good service. The appropriate amount to tip for those who handle your luggage range from $1.00 to $2.00 per bag, if they are taken to your room. It is nice to leave a tip and a small thank you note for housekeeping. From my years as a hotel manager I know first hand that housekeeping is the hardest working department and they get the least amount of recognition. Typically $1.00 to $2.00 per day is appreciated for their service. In restaurants or for room service the typical amount is from 15% to 20%, if you ordered room service many times the hotel will add the gratuity automatically.

I hope these insider tips will help you to have a smooth and safe trip.
